It was an amazing, entertaining, shocking, smart, clever episode that showed us not only Ben in the future but also Sayid... and we found out why [partly] Sayid is killing for Ben.... Great epsiode... and yes The Constant does rank up there but i believe 4x09 beats it!

I accepted the throwdown before I saw your comment. I would have to counter that "The Constant" was THE best episode so far this season. It generated more discussion, theories, and speculation than any other episode, and gave us amazing insight into Desmond but the larger LOST picture.

I have to admit that The Constant did widen the scope of LOST but so The Shape Of Things To Come... Ben is a time traveler and him and Widmore have known each other for years... and Widmore might have been on the island???

amazing....

My argument is not that this was the best episode EVER, but that it was the best episode of this season. We had Widmore bidding on the Journal from the Black Rock and evidently involved in Desmond's time travel; Widmore agrees to talk to Desmond and gives him Penny's location? Seriously?; the possibility that Ben has a constant, just as Desmond does; the interplay of Daniel Faraday... so even though this episode had a lot of movement of time (Which I'm not a great fan of), it is solidly nestled into the larger plot of LOST, which ultimately, may be about time itself.

Even The Epsiode Acting wise has been some of the best work Michael Emerson has done on the show... did you see his look after ***SPOILER ALERT*** dear old alex was killed? PRICELESS.... That episode has emmys all over it. But besides that, THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME and THE CONSTANT both show signs of both storylines in the future merging... BEN wants to get even with Widmore so he wants to kill Desmonds Penny... [yikes].... this episode just simply shed more light on the overall scope of LOST to me... and i enjoyed it ALOT

I'm not saying "The Shape of Things to Come" wasn't a great episode - just not the best. My argument primarily is for "The Constant" but I'll also make a pitch for "The Economist". Was anything more shocking that finding out that Sayid worked for Ben? That there is - for sure - a time differential or something funky happening on the island? Finding Ben's secret room with passports, etc? In terms of acting, both Ben and Sayid's underscored performances in the closing scene was some of the best ever. oh, and Dharma boxed wine???

I think "The Shape of Things to Come" was good, but a letdown in a lot of ways. I think both "The Constant" and "The Economist" were much stronger episodes in overall LOST mythology.

Not only is "The Constant" the best episode of Season 4 so far, it may be one of the best episodes of LOST ever. A perfect hour of television.

I know everyone's into all that time traveling stuff, but I prefer more action and more Ben. 4x09 is easily my favorite so far.

Honestly, "The Constant" was far from the best episode of this show. It had a fabulous ending, but it definitely lacked a lot of what makes other episodes great.

I am REALLY torn here...because I absolutely LOVED "The Constant"! Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond), Jeremy Davies (Daniel Faraday), and Sonya Walger (Penny Widmore) were all FANTASTIC in this episode and the ending is simply amazing! Des and Penny FINALLY connecting on Christmas Eve is by far one of the best moments in the history of this series!

Also, the concept of "The Constant" episode is truly unique and manages to distinguish itself from all the other episodes of LOST! The back and forth time jumping that Desmond takes part in even managed to out do the amazing Oceanic 6 flash forwards concept that was introduced last season!

"The Constant" is definitely a SERIES CLASSIC and an important piece in the LOST puzzle, but I have to say, "The Shape Of Things To Come" is THE BEST episode I have seen this season! Period!

"The Shape Of Things To Come" could also possibly be the best episode of the LOST series so far! It blew my mind when I saw it! It is one of the ONLY episodes of LOST that I have ever watched again immediately after it ended!

Even last week's Jack flash forward episode, "Something Nice Back Home", as great as it was, paled in comparison to this, and this is coming from someone whose favorite episode before "The Shape Of Things To Come" was "Through The Looking Glass" (the first Jack flash forward, and first flash forward period.)

"Shape Of Things To Come" moves a lot faster than a lot of episodes of LOST usually do and the circumstances are so dire that not only do we see Alex brutally killed in front of her father, but we learn that not only can Ben summon/control old smokey to do his bidding, but he can travel through time (via The Orchid station, remember his jacket said "Halliwax") to recruit soldiers (i.e. Sayid) in his war against Widmore.

The end of the episode, where it is revealed that Ben and Widmore have a LONG history together sheds a whole new light on the mythology of LOST and Ben's vow to murder Penelope as Charles murdered Alex was COMPLETELY chilling and one of Michael Emerson's best moments as Benjamin Linus.

Widmore saying, "Then I guess the hunt is on for both of us!" still gives me chills too!

"The Shape Of Things To Come" is definitely the best episode I have seen so far this season, and that's saying ALOT given that this season has produced some of the best episodes of the series so far: "Confirmed Dead", "The Economist", "The Constant", "The Other Woman", "Yi Jeon", "Meet Kevin Johnson", etc.

The only other episodes that could top this episode at this point would be next week's "Cabin Fever" (where Locke FINALLY has a one on one sitdown with Jacob) or all 3 hours of the season finale "There's No Place Like Home", because as we already know, every season finale of LOST ends on an epic note that, yet again, changes the series forever!

LOST rules!!!!!!!!!

I'm with Mr. Strong. I thought the Constant was a little overrated, but maybe I need to rewatch it before I cement my view. I definitely loved the Penny/Desmond phone reunion ending and the concept behind the episode left ample speculation over the island's enigmatic properties. However, The Shape of Things to Come lived to its episode title big time. It left even greater speculation to future events and threw one emotion tugging twist after another. First, the mercs gunning down half of Locke's group, witnessing Ben's bluff end with Alex's execution and then spotting Ben's stunned face afterward, that weird door that ended with the smoke monster attacking the mercs (though I'm not completely sold on Ben releasing it), Sayid's future connection with Ben coming to play, Ben sneaking in to Widmore's room and declaration to kill Penny...even with Lost's methodical standards, this was too much for one measly episode! It was superb from beginning to end. Congrats Lindelof/Cuse. You've done it again.
