Out of all the villains on all the tv shows I have seen Michael Emerson as Ben on lost is the creepiest/scariest. He also was particularly scary as the killer on the Practice when he kept the head in the freezer. He gives depth to the villains but at the same time gives you the willies!
I agree that Dexter and Sloan are creepy in their own rights, but I still think Michael Emerson does it better. Dexter is scary because he has no emotional attachments and kills without remorse, but he doesn't seem so bad because he is killing other killers and we get to hear all his thoughts. With Ben we have no idea what he's thinking, who he's going to manipulate next and what his end plans are. He has an emotional attachment to his daughter and juliette, but it makes him more vengeful and scarier when he comes after people on behalf of those two. Sloan was similar to Ben in the manipulating, but I never found him that scary. I think its Michael Emerson's looks that seal the deal
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

Of all time? Michael Emerson might not even be the villian on Lost. How about Gary Cole from American Gothic a sheriff on the loose kiling families and corupting townspeople? How about the Smoking Man from X-files who killed Kennedy, MLK, and Bobby? But in my eyes the scariest villian is not someone who is a villian but is slowly becoming one. Micheal C Hall on Dexter is a serial killer with the skills and abilities to get away with it. Dexter lives in the real world and serial killers evolve. Hall is playing a man who is slowly evolving into something it might be a hero or it could be the worst serial killer in the history of television.

I know he's a good guy, but my vote is for Jack Bauer every time.

Dexter is too hot to be the scariest villan ever. Ben on the other hand has the creepy look to match his evilness.

I don't really like either arguement. Yes, Michael Emerson is very scary, but you could have added soo much more to why. The fact that he went through all that torture; no matter what, he wouldn't reveal anything on who he really was. He was able to constantly get into everyone's head, especially Lockes. He was then able to escape without even breaking a sweat. He made the survivors believe that someone else was the leader all through the second season. And then in the thrid season he really took off as an evil genious. We saw that his dad blamed him for his moms death. We saw that he was the leader (kind of) of the Others. That he thinks 25 moves ahead of everyone else. That he does whatever he can to try to not let his emotions get the better of him. That he can lie about the smallest and biggest things, and be able to have whoever he's lieing to believe it. Which makes it hard to know when he's telling the truth.
On the other side, you could have chosen a few characters (I don't really know anyone besides T-Bag from Prison Break) and dig deep into how they act and react to others on the show. Describe what they do that gives you that goose bump feeling. And quite possibly, how their character changed the way you view villians.
Sorry, but at the moment, neither gets my vote.

I agree with Greywolf that tell your point of view with more depth if you really want a good debate! As someone already said we don't actually know just how villianous Ben actually is, there are grey areas there.BUT I will give you that he is one creepy mutha!! Then again isn't Ole Teddy (T-Bag) JUST as frightening? That voice oooh gives me the creepin willies!! My favourite villian - though not a totally bad guy - is Al Swearengen from Deadwood.Only in comicbooks are things so black & white, good & evil. What I loved about Al was the way he started off the villian with seemingly no scruples but progressed throughout the show to become likeable - you even glimpsed that under all the immorality he had a soft spot, which he would immediately cover up by pretending his acts of kindness were done to further his own agenda! And I agree that Sheriff Buck was too, another scary dude! xx

What loglady said.
Ben Linus is manipulative, sure, but aside from killing the people on the freighter (which may have been for good reason, for all we know), but he's not pure evil--he's one of the good guys, right?
Arvin Sloane, on the other hand, is a cold-blooded killer if I ever saw one. Just a short list of people he has killed or tried to kill: his daughter Nadia, his wife Emily, Jack Bristow, Diane Dixon, Marshall (!)...and lots of nameless faceless types. Make no mistake about it--he's a bad guy.

michael emerson, hands down! i don't watch lost, but i DO remember him on the practice and he was effing creepy back then. there's just something about his eyes... they're very big and very vacant, like he's looking at you, but he's looking through you... ahhh!
