So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
Just one week after the amazing "The Shape Of Things To Come" episode of LOST (best episode of the season and maybe of the series too IMHO), we get treated to this complete waste of time called "Something Nice Back Home"! This episode was REALLY a letdown, especially after all the shock, excitement, intrigue and action that was delivered the week before and, that frankly, LOST fans have come to expect from this series. This episode ranks right up there with "Stranger In A Strange Land" as the snoozer-of-the-season-episode, after all LOST usually has one (only one, or two maybe, mind you) boring episode like this per season. Examples: Season 1 - "Hearts and Minds" [Boone/Shannon centric], Season 2 - "Abandoned" [Shannon centric], Season 3 - "The Glass Balerina [Sun/Jin centric], "Stranger In A Strange Land" [Jack centric], and NOW "Something Nice Back Home" in Season 4. While "Shape Of Things To Come" made me rejoice the return of LOST after the long writer's strike, this episode made me question just what the writers were thinking when they wrote this junk! We learn absoulutely nothing here! So Jack and Kate were engaged! and made out a bunch! So what, Ben is going to kill Penny!!!
First off, this was not my favorite episode, either.
I admit that I too, was thrown by Something Nice back Home- You follow up all that action with THIS?? However the episode in itself isn't all that bad.
One of the beauties of this show is their ability to balance action/horror and human drama. (I actually prefer the character studies to all the sci-fi) Either way, there is always still plenty of tension and mystery. I guess they figured we'd need a breather. And they also want to keep us salivating for more, throwing us a curve ball.
Lost producers have been changing things up this season more than they ever have.. It is almost gauranteed that from week to week you won't follow the exact same story thread back to back. All the characters are scattered and seperated more than ever before. There's alot to cover.
I am as eager as you are to get back to Ben vs Whidmore. But I am also patient (You must be too, if you're still watching the show after everyone else seems to have jumped ship.) So relax, we'll get there. You're forgetting that this, and all the other episodes you mentioned serve a very important purpose: setting up all the peices in place
I totally agree with you: EVERY episode of LOST is a significant piece in the puzzle, no matter how boring that episode may be. I also agree with you on the fact that what makes LOST so interesting is BECAUSE it is constantly changing from week to week, year to year, and is NEVER the same show. For the most part, the writers do a fantastic job of not repeating themselves, except when it comes to Jack, Kate, & Sawyer's love triangle. This thing just does not end! In all fairness, that was the MAIN reason I did not like this episode. I CERTAINLY enjoyed seeing Christian Shepard reach out to both of his children from beyond the grave, and Jack raising Aaron in the future was a nice touch too! (I wonder if he knows about his connection to Aaron?) Plus Hurley's message to Jack from Charlie was BEYOND creepy! But to have to sit through (yet again) this tired triangle, EVEN in the future, was a bit much! Jack was right, Sawyer is not there, Jack is! Why should he have to continue to compete for Kate's affections against someone who isn't even around to begin with? BORING! Other than the creepy encounters I mentioned earlier, this episode reveals next to nothing and has little relevance.
Ah, I see we've touched on the root of the problem: Jack/Kate/Sawyer
I disagree that this episode reveals "next to nothing and has little relevance." Obviously we are starting to see why/how Jack turns into a beard-wearing, pill-popping suicidal.
But on a nother level, this episode was validation for fans of Jack and Kate. Last year, the Sawyer/Kate fans were given the treat of them finally doing the nasty in some cages. This season, Jack/Kate fans get their reward: They finally (finally) FINALLY ended up together! Unfortuantely there are no happy endings yet.
I understand if you aren't a fan of love triangles. We get enough of them from EVERY OTHER SHOW on tv. But I would hardly say you had to sit through another tired one for the whole episode, because the Sawyer business wasn't revealed until the end- a reveal I personally liked because for those of us who DO like the love triangle, there's a little more to latch on to. Kate hasn't made a final decision, so it's not over yet. It seems you feel the same as Jack: infuriated and tired of being jerked around- which means it's working.
Surely we can all relate.
I definitely relate to Jack on this issue! I know how it feels to constantly be pushed aside by a woman I love for another man, who treats her badly no less! So, I do empathize. If I were Jack, I would just be with Juilet and STOP wasting my time on indecisive Kate! Juliet is hotter than Kate too, but that is a topic for another throwdown. This tired triangle is a BIG reason why this episode is a letdown, but it is NOT the ONLY reason this episode frustrated me. Unlike the previous Ben-centric outing, which left me on the edge of my seat, this episode is COMPLETELY predictable. I mean who among us didn't KNOW that it was Kate taking a shower in that bathroom with Jack. That "SURPRISE" came across as more of a status quo shock that shocked virtually no one. Also, when Jack visited Hurley the first time in the season premiere, Hurley's words upset him very much, so who didn't think that their visit this time around would be any different. Besides the message from Charlie, it was just a retread of the previous visit. Don't get me wrong, I like Jack. I can understand why he would pop pills, seeing your dead dad will do that to you! But to become an addict over Kate? She's not worth it.
Whoa, whoa, whoa-
Kate looks damn good climbing a tree. Juliet may have to think about climbing a few herself, to look as good as Kate does in her skivvies
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

I wouldn't say by far...

I agree that "Something Nice Back Home" is far from the best Lost episode, but comparing its negative attributes to "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a little harsh. Granted, the island action wasn't really that intriguing with the castaways in Jack's camp, trying to remove his appendix before it bursts. However, the flash forward future planted the seeds with what we all witnessed last May: bearded Jack. Without this installment, we won't know how he eventually morphed into the desperate, alcohol guzzling, hallucinating, self-destructive figure we spotted in season 3's conclusion. After Jack sees images of his father and then denounces Kate because of pettiness that stems from his savior complex, we see the beginning of Jack's de-evolution. For that alone, it's difficult to shun this episode as bad. Tepid, maybe, and perhaps a little dull coming after the intensely paced and emotionally driven "Shape of Things to Come" but hardly horrible. I'd give it a B- overall.

Couldn't have said it better myself, t3hdow

I think Something Nice Back Home was better than the Locke centric episode that just aired...
Oceanic 6 05/12/08
Are you kidding hmorsey? Come on, really? I mean there were sooooo many huge IMPORTANT reveals in last week's Locke outing!
It was way better than having to sit through Jack watching himself get cut open on the island, and then in the future, having to be betrayed (yet again) by Kate and her on-going loyalty for Sawyer!
I would rather see an hour like this, which pretty significantly covers the history of John Locke, than to have to see Jack continually pledge his undying love to a woman who will NEVER fully return his affections, and who (by her own inherant nature) will ALWAYS betray him, no matter how much he does for her!
The fact that the ageless Richard Alpert was interested in Locke before he was even born and that Matthew Abbadon urged John to go on the walkabout to Australia (implying somehow that he knew that 815 would crash on the island and that the island would heal Locke), were ONLY two of the reasons this episode was way BETTER than having to see Jack enter into yet another failed relationship!
I mean that scene where Richard Alpert tests a young Locke by making him undergo a reincarnation/rebirth test was classic! I LOVED (and knew) that Locke would reach for that knife! That's his freaking weapon of choice!
Plus, this episode raises SOOOO many IMPORTANT questions! Why and how did young John draw the black smoke attacking someone? Is Alpert immortal? or did he just use The Orchid to go back in time (like Ben did to go forward), having already known Locke's current importance on the island as an effort to get Locke to the island sooner?and, as a result, did those items REALLY already belong to future island dweller Locke?
Also, was Locke right when he told Jack about fate and destiny, saying they were all chosen and that the island brought them there? It would certainly seem like Locke's destiny was sealed from birth, given that Abbadon and Alpert guided him and that all the events in his life lead him to...the island!
and the ending: "He wants us to move the island!" WOW! WOW! WOW!
"Cabin Fever" should have been the episode to follow "The Shape Of Things To Come", NOT "Something Nice Back Home"

Why are LOST fans harder to please than any other fans? The Shows producers know where the story is going... there are 2 seasons left with 17 episodes each... apparently "Something Nice Back Home" was intended to show you how Kate and Jack ended up at the end of Through The Looking Glass.... COME ON you guys... quite acting like Hereoes fans... this episode obviously was important... so SHUT UP! and watch the damn show or go watch something else...

Well, let's not get into another Lost vs. Heroes fight. Lord knows the internet's full of them already.
I agree that maybe Oceanic 6 jumped the gun on this throwdown. The episode wasn't the most exciting, but for amazing installments like 'Through the Looking Glass', 'The Constant' and 'Shape of Things to Come' to work, it needs more methodical ones like 'Something Nice Back Home' to put the pieces together. (also, I rather enjoyed season 3's Glass Ballerina) Besides, it makes us appreciate the aforementioned home run episodes even more. Lost has proven time and time again that patience gets rewarded down the line, so sit back and let the show perform its magic, yet again.
RobGrizzly 05/14/08
Indeed. I also liked The Glass Ballerina. Jae from the window, Sun shooting that punk on the boat. That was a good one.
Oh, and the thing about Heroes fans...they tend to be Lost fans too
Oceanic 6 05/15/08
Without the groundbreaking brilliance of LOST in the first place, there would be NO Heroes! Mediocre as that show is. That's all I am gonna say...
Oceanic 6 05/15/08
Also, maybe I should have re-phrased this throwdown as: "Something Nice Back Home" is the most BORING episode of LOST this season, and NOT the worst episode by far this season, considering the massive backlash this throwdown has received thus far.
I'll try to be a little more considerate to fellow obsessive LOST fans like myself in the future.
I still stand by my previous statement: Juliet IS hotter than Kate! I'd like to see Kate even try to fill out a bra like Juliet does, or look HALF as good naked in bed with a bowl of ice cream and an Other lover! LOL!
What do you say RobGrizzly? Should that be my next throwdown topic? You game?
