Many have expressed their discontent with the five-year jump that we saw on the Desperate Housewives finale. I don't know if Cherry is telling that "Five Years Later" story next year, but if he is...relax!
The move is sure to invigorate the series and will potentially take everything to the next level and subsequently, more enjoyable. So we won't get to see Gabby pregnant, and we will have to deal with those hideous hairstyles, but there's more to this shift than vanity.
In recent weeks the DH characters have grown boring, inane even. Gabby's self-absorbed, "blind man hater" schtick has grown tiresome, Lynette's interminable fights with Tom are getting repetitive, and watching another housewife raise a baby could prove to be coma-inducing.
The five year jump will serve as a catalyst for better story-telling, giving the characters bigger problems and maturing them a half decade, which will undoubtedly impact the way they deal with things.
And if nothing else, remember this isn't a Deus Ex Machina, which is what distinguishes it from the Harry Potter epilogue. Naysayers and skeptics..and least give it until the Fall. Then you can talk all the crap you want on these housewives.

im sure that desperate housewives can do a flashforward well, but to compare the flashforward to that of lost's is highly questionable for me. First, in Lost, the flashforward completely changed the game and flipped everything..oh yeah and NOBODY saw it coming! Desperate Housewives flashforward wasnt a big surprise since it was already being reported on by major media outlets, and its not exactly changing the game, just changing the setting. On desperate Housewives itll still be the same ol same ol except theyll be in the future and theyll be the occasional flash back. Also to compare Lost and Desperate is almost laughable because Lost was the first to use the flashforward method and Desperate is following suit and will no doubt always be compared, and based on the quality of the show, almost always be compared with lost, with it being the "worse" of the flashforwards. Lastly, the writers on Lost are far superior to the Ones of DH. Im not saying Marc Cherry isnt great, but Team Darlton are fan-flipping-tastic, and their worst season (Season 2) and nowhere near as god awful as the mess the was Housewives Season 2.Overall, ithink DH cant touch Lost in any of the given arguments

I feel like you've misunderstood me. My crack at Lost in the title of the Throwdown was meant as a joke....I didn't mention Lost at all in my argument because it's not particularly relevant.
What IS relevant is the very strong possibility that DH will be able to pull off a flash forward well, and keep in mind that we're arguing over whether DH will be improved as a direct result of the FF storytelling.
But while we're discussing Lost...DH and Lost are impossible to compare not only because they're each using the FF method to accomplish a different purpose, but also because DH FFs will (likely) be integrated into the show completely differently from those in Lost.
After all, Lost's FFs intercut regular island scenes, whereas the most likely scenario for next year is for DH's FFs to be aired exclusively - that is, 5 Years Later is the only setting. As opposed to using the strategy for juxtaposition and insight into character developmen and suspense, DH's FF method will be used as a departure from the last four years on Wisteria Lane, freeing the show from some of its dying plots...like Gabby's "sexier-than-thou" attitude and Bree's Orson drama and transporting it to new heights

when you put lost in there, i dont really know how i couldve understood it was a joke. Your argument says that you think desperate housewives can do flash forwards just as well as any island drama, i.e.: lost. That title suggests that you think that desperate will be able to pull off a flash forward just as well as lost does. That what im rebuttling. Thats basically the argument your presenting. if you wanted to write something about how desperate housewives will be able to pull off a flashforward well, you shouldve written a blog and not a throwdown. (im sorry if it comes out a little blunt, but im tired and i couldnt think of another way to put it. Sorry!)

To argue exclusively about comparing Lost and DH would be to neglect my entire first argument...I feel like people have stopped reading the actual throwdowns and only browsed through the titles before writing a rebuttal.
Sorry that this got so lost in translation...for one thing, I didn't even mention Lost in my first argument nor by name in my throwdown title, so I don't know why this has ever been an issue, but whatever. No big deal.

"a certain island drama": what were you talking about? gillegan's island? as far as i can tell, theres really no other island dramas on tv that has implemented a flash forward device recently other than lost. And if you say in the title that desperate housewives is just as good as lost, and then go on to say that that isnt what you were trying to argue, is misleading.

LOST is quite possibly the BEST series in recent TV history!
The concept alone is far more entertaining, groundbreaking and thought provoking than that of the plight of suburban housewives who constantly cheat on someone or complain about something.
LOST is NO LESS than a television MASTERPIECE!
To compare it to Housewives (in ANY way) is not only laughable, but quite fankly is a huge insult.
LOST requires you to play along in it's tremendously complicated (but oh so satisfying!) game and DH just puts you to sleep most of the time!
I admit I have never seen DH, but I HAVE seen the promos and I have no interest in watching this overhyped nightime soap!
I don't care if they DID flash forward 5 years! NOTHING DH has done will EVER compare to the brilliance of last year's LOST finale in it's final moments! "WE HAVE TO GO BACK KATE!" Mind. Totally. Blown!
I can't wait to see what Team Darlton and co. have in store for us on May 29th! and beyond too! Can anyone say that about DH?
It just DOESN'T generate the same level of excitement as LOST because LOST is a far superior show! Period.
I mean ABC is giving LOST a 3 hour all night event to close the book on Season 4! Would ABC do something like that for DH? I think not. Point made.

I wish I took this throwdown....
Salemskeeper 05/21/08
So DH is trying to be like LOST? That's ridiculous! It's not on any level of comparison.
Melissalane 05/21/08
I think it's a mistake to compare "DH" to "Lost" for many reasons. However, I don't believe "DH" was trying to be like "Lost." "Lost" was trying to blow our minds, since the assumption was that the scenes were flashbacks, not flash forwards. "DH" told us right away: "Five Years Later."
Many shows have skipped ahead a few years for storytelling purposes. The "Dawson's Creek" finale was set five years in the future. Recently, "One Tree Hill" skipped ahead four years, likely to skip over those awkward college years that trouble many shows. See? Compare "DH" to "Lost" and "DH" loses. But compare it to "Dawson's" or "Tree Hill," and it wins big-time. I, for one, am interested to see what will happen in Season 4 of "DH."
Melissalane 05/21/08
Er, Season 5. Shoot.
t3hdow 05/21/08
Oceanic 6, if I were you, I'd dial your Lost enthusiasm a notch, because you sound dangerously close to a chauvinist. ABC has as much a debt to owe Lost as Desperate Housewives, since both shows brought the network back to the forefront. Prior to Fall 2004, ABC had next to no hit shows (the reality/game shows don't count) and was in 4th place for years.
Melissalane is right about about the comparison to Lost being misleading. They're two completely different shows, so it's an insult to both by pairing them together. Besides, just because they shared a storytelling device doesn't mean they'll be used the same way. To add with her list, anyone remember Battlestar Galactica's time jump at the end of season 2? It didn't radically chance the show like Lost, but sped up the show to the next big event (i.e., the Cylons taking over New Caprica).
Polaski 05/22/08
Okay, so I didn't read the comments before posting my second argument....but now that I do read them, I see that we're all really saying the same thing. Maybe t3hdow says it best with "Just because they shared a storytelling device doesn't mean they'll [use it] in the same way."
cynthia 05/22/08
Both shows are great while Lost is obviously the superior show. I do however think that the flash forward is a great idea and think that the writers at DH will be able to do it justice. One Tree Hill began this year with a similar premise flash forwarding the show four years to skip the always horrible college years (Buffy anyone?). The show has not only grown in veiwership but in content.
CookieFan 05/23/08
While I don't think DH is in the same category of Lost, I like the jump. It was getting boring. Jumping ahead will give more material. However, it's not a flash forward b/c that is where it will pick up. Lost employs the flash forwards to tease us with what happened when they got off the island.
RocketQueen 05/24/08
'Lost' whilst extremely confusing (In my opinion this last season ridiculously so.A wee bit to do with flashes to the future to the past to alternate realities to other planets) is an interesting well written and strangely addictive TV show.I am sorry to offend but Desperate Housewives is a glorified soap opera and only the most desperately bored housewife would sit through it.
b.wall 05/26/08
haha the reason i took this throwdown was because i found the argument that lost and DH were on the same level was laughable. i mean, i like both shows, but theyre completly different, and in all honesty, i think that lost is a far superior show.
