I love Simon Cowell. He shatters dreams.
But after what? 7? 8? 9 seasons of American Idol, he's become sort of one-note. It seems all he's good for now is getting a rise out of the audience. Sure, he tells it like it is, but he seems to give more detail only when discussing what he didn't like about a performance.

Nigel always has constructive criticism to give either way. He's even genuinely polite to auditioners who totally don't deserve it. Most contestants learn something after being on So You Think You Can Dance. I think it's nice to know Nigel can contribute more to his observations that just "That was dreadful."

While I will concede that Simon does from time to time seem one note, Nigel suffers from being the executive producer of the show he judges, which gives him less objectivity. For example in recent episodes of SYTYCD, we've some horrible auditions from repeat auditioners (of this show and AI). Nigel has neither been polite or constructive-- see the transvestite or Sex. He's the one who chose to show these people, so don;t get all higher than thou with them.
I like both Simon and Nigel as judges (in fact I'd love Nigel as a guest judge on AI). However, Simon brings a certain objectivity that Nigel doesn't have. Also, Simon's meanness is part of his attraction, and balances the always positive Paula. Nigel can afford to be more constructive, as his fellow judges are also constructive. With Simon, sometimes he has to deal with Paundy, and the results can be messy.

If by messy you mean viewers voting AGAINST the right contestant just to spite Simon, then you're absolutely right.

But you make a great counterpoint! I understand that Simon is younger, more crass, better looking, and more appealing- the "cooler" judge. But that doesn't make him better.

He may not get executive producer credits, but he brought AI to the States and still holds some of the same responsibilites as Simon when it comes to what contestants get put through.

Besides, It seems as if these days no one even cares what Simon has to say. His advice, is always shrugged off, that is if you can even hear him underneath all the boos. Simon's comments need to stop being trite insults that are a matter of opinion and start being smart critiques that are a matter of fact.

and if I hear "It sounded like kareoke" one more time...

I don't know as if Simon is more appealing than Nigel per se- they both have their own magic they bring to the table. I definitely think that people ignore Simon, but I don't think that has relevance on his judging capabilities: he calls it like he sees it. Also, Simon has gone back to watch AI after the show and has changed his mind, so I for one respect him for his honesty. Yeah, he has his horrible catchphrases, but so do other judges...
I'd come up with a beter argument for Simon, but I'm super tired. (I honestly like them both, I just have a better feel for Simon as a judge over seven seasons of AI and only 3 of SYTYCD...)

Yeah, I like 'em both, too. Just thought it'd be an interesting throwdown to debate. This was sort of exhausting- It could go either way, really.

Final thought: I really think it comes down to that Nigel used to be a dancer, and Simon is just a producer of music, so they come from different perspectives... again with Nigel, what always bothers me is that he produces the show, but then makes comments like Wednesday "We haven't seen a lot of..." well who's fault is that? Otherwise, I like them about the same.

Nigel is such an idiot sometimes though. Like when he said he couldn't judge the dancing b/c he couldn't see Neil and Lauren's eyes last year during Mia's goggles number. Or telling Shauna that the dress she was wearing wasn't flattering and therefore the performance wasn't as good as he would have liked. Granted, Simon harped on Carly's style choices, but Shauna's costume was just that...a costume that matched the dance and which she had no control over.

Ditto on the producer objectivity...when Nigel says something to Sex like "you are just here to be on TV", I yell at the TV that Nigel is the one putting him there!

is it bad that when i saw the name nigel i thought of ANTM??? not SYTYCD??

loglady, there is never anything wrong with having Nigel Barker on the brain. He makes that show worth watching--him and Tyra's constant insistence on "smiling with your eyes", of course.

Nigel is sort of...boring? Sorry but Simon is still better looking and more interesting to watch than Nigel, though Nigel does seem more honest than Simon.

It's hard to say the Simon knock off is better than the original Simon.
