Obviously you never know on this show, but I really think the purpose of the Jin flashback was mostly to contrast the man he used to be with the man he became on the Island. On top of that, that whole panicked Panda search was there to trick us into thinking he was just freaking out over getting to Sun on time. So I really don't think there was anything beyond that to the flashback. But this being Lost, I could be totally wrong.
