Mr. Slezak,

I very much enjoy your contributions to EW both on the website and my EW magazine I recieve at home. I have read your comments on American Idol. Something has hit me this morning after Carly's departure from American Idol. I am old. The show has become a generational thing. Since I grew up in the Woodstock era, music idols were all about "feeling the music". That is probably why I liked what Lord Webber did with the idol contestants. They seemed more connected to what they were singing. I have noticed that the young "star" singers that make guest appearances on Idol are all about the computer mixing and commercial rendering of the songs. Sort of reminds me about the disconnect my sister and I had when I was listening to Iron Butterfly and she was in love with the Monkees.

That said I prefer the mature singers on Idol because I am old and listening for that emotional vocal connection to the lyrics. I understand the youth is chosing popularity over vocal skill. Maybe that is what it takes to be a successful music artist today.
